"Does anyone know the history about the face on the moon? I just see the outline of an afro when I look at the moon."

Throughout history, people have looked up at night and wondered at the moon. Today, we know that dark spots on the moon-the lunar maria-are impact craters that had filled with lava and rapidly cooled. And yet, even with that knowledge they are still called maria-the plural of mare, Latin for "sea", which is what ancient astronomers thought they were.

Various cultures have seen different things in those patterns of dark on light that make up the near side of the moon. Micmac

lore holds that Rabbit caught the moon man in his hunting trap and his eyes were so hurt by the light, he threw clay at him; when the moon is dark, he's away trying to rub the clay off, but he's never been able to. Other Native American stories tell of spots being three frogs, or "an Indian on a blanket".

Speaking of rabbits, Tsukiyomi is the Japanese god of the moon and some say he appears as the rabbit on the moon. In another story, the rabbit is actually a messenger between Tsukiyomi and his sister Amaterasu (goddess of the sun) since they cannot get along. Meanwhile, Chinese myth holds that spots on the moon are the rabbit that makes potions for the moon goddess. There are many more Asian traditions for the rabbit on the moon as opposed to the man usually (but clearly not always) seen by Western viewers.

Ancient European stories seem to focus mostly around the man on the moon carrying a burden-often as punishment for being some sort of thief, or in European Christian stories, for working on the Sabbath.

Pretty much, whenever looked up in the sky and saw the marks on the face of the moon, they were inspired to create a story to give them meaning.
